You may wish to seek a second opinion if:

  • You feel you have been diagnosed incorrectly with an eye disease.
  • You wish to confirm your candidacy for eye surgery such as LASIK.
  • You are not satisfied with your physician’s responses to your questions or concerns.
  • You wish to see if a different doctor can offer a new perspective to a situation or offer a different course of treatment.
  • Your contacts sometimes fall out or are poorly fitted.
  • You wish for a through review of your medical records.
  • You just don’t feel satisfied with your current care.

In many cases, you will not need a referral for a second opinion. However, if you do require a referral, simply ask your current physician or eye doctor, and mention your concern. Patients can choose an in-person appointment or an online second opinion to help better make an informed decision.

While some people may feel intimidated or do not want to offend their current doctor, there is no need to worry. Any doctor should be open to the idea of a second opinion in order to best meet their client’s needs. It is also important to keep open communication between yourself and your physicians to increase the potential for the best outcomes. This means being open to various treatment plans, communicating your medical history, and partnering closely with your care team to ensure correct diagnosis.

Some tips to prepare for a second opinion visit include:

  • Learn as much as you can about your situation, and determine which type of treatment you would like.
  • Organize all your relevant medical records.
  • Write down any concerns you have so you can discuss them with your second doctor.
  • Write down a list of questions you may have for your second doctor. These questions may cover many topics, including your treatment options, the benefits and risks of these options, and what may happen if you wait on treatment.
  • Read through doctor reviews; a reputable doctor is paramount whether you choose local doctors or a virtual second opinion.
