John S. Kung, MD, FAAO, FICS — is the Surgeon Director of the group. He has invented and licensed a surgical instrument — the Kung Guide — utilized by his fellow ophthalmologists performing vision correction surgery. He is an expert on laser eye surgery, PRK, LASIK, Astigmatism correction and excimer laser vision correction. He has trained extensively and regularly provides the latest treatments for cataracts, advanced intraocular lens implants, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease
and macular degeneration. He was selected by the New York Times as a “SuperDoctor” (top 5% in the NY area, nominated by other doctors) and by Castle Connolly as a “Top Doctor”, one of the few to be on both lists.Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the National Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. John S. Kung is highly knowledgeable in the field of Ophthalmology, serving patients in Staten Island and New Jersey.
He is a summa cum laude, valedictorian-nominated graduate of the City College of New York. He became a distinguished graduate of Mt. Sinai School of Medicine where he earned a special designation with distinction in research. He served his residency and chief residency in ophthalmology at Columbia University – Presbyterian Medical Center, Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute, whose mission is to train the future leaders of Ophthalmology. He completed a postgraduate fellowship in cornea, refractive and anterior segment surgery at Raritan Bay Medical Center. He has an additional postgraduate certification in retinal diseases. He has been a consultant to many companies including Novartis, Allergan, Alcon and Pharmacia. He is the author of A Patient’s Guide to LASIK on laser vision correction and has published many articles on eye diseases and surgical techniques. Dr. Kung is a frequent instructor in new techniques for eye surgery and often has other doctors referring difficult cases while coming to the OR to observe his techniques. He lectures nationally and internationally on eye diseases and surgical procedures and has provided care to the underserved on mission trips abroad.
Dr. John S. Kung is active in many professional societies. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Board of Ophthalmology, the American College of Eye Surgeons, the International Society for Refractive Surgery, the New York State Ophthalmological Society and the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology. In his spare time, he enjoys travel with his family, tennis and reads widely on many topics.
