For decades, patients have been enjoying the results of their LASIK procedures to achieve clear vision without requiring glasses or contact lenses. Now, advanced techniques in LASIK are available to reduce potential complications. One such option is bladeless LASIK surgery, also known as all-laser LASIK. Kung Eye Center is one of the few New York and New Jersey practices to offer this advanced LASIK option.
Bladeless LASIK is an alternative to the traditional LASIK procedure. When performing LASIK surgery, an oscillating diamond blade is traditionally used to create a corneal flap. In the bladeless LASIK eye surgery, a femtosecond laser is used to create this flap, meaning the entire procedure is completed using various lasers.
Patients must be at least 21 years old before undergoing a bladeless LASIK laser vision correction. They should also have stable vision that does not change for at least two years. During a consultation, your ophthalmologist will evaluate your prescription, eye health, and vision needs to determine whether bladeless LASIK is a good option for you. Certain eye conditions may disqualify you from being a good candidate.
Prior to your bladeless LASIK procedure, your ophthalmologist will conduct an exam to take precise measurements of your eyes and assess your vision needs to prepare for the surgery and make necessary customizations. On the day of your surgery, you will receive numbing eye drops to ensure your comfort. Next, a lid speculum will be used to keep your eyes open throughout the surgery, and a suction ring is placed on the eyes to keep them from moving. The femtosecond laser is then used to create a flap in the cornea. Following these steps, bladeless LASIK is much the same as traditional LASIK. A laser is used to reshape the cornea, and the flap is replaced.

For a majority of bladeless LASIK patients, downtime after surgery lasts about 24 hours. You can return home immediately after surgery and can expect blurry vision and some minimal discomfort. Light sensitivity is normal, and you should wear dark sunglasses when outdoors. You should prioritize rest for the first 1-3 days after the procedure and can resume normal activities quickly. As you heal, you may experience some difficulty with night vision, halos or glare from lights, and some redness. Most bladeless LASIK patients will have clear vision within a day after surgery. The eye is considered fully healed approximately three months after surgery. Throughout the recovery process, you will have regular appointments with your Kung Eye Center ophthalmologist who can monitor your healing and check your vision.
