At Kung Eye Center, patients in Staten Island and East Brunswick trust Dr. Kung and his expert team for advanced corneal treatments like Collagen Cross-Linking (CXL). This minimally invasive procedure helps strengthen the cornea and stop the progression of conditions like keratoconus and post-LASIK ectasia. If you’ve been recommended for corneal collagen cross-linking, understanding the steps before, during, and after the procedure can help set realistic expectations and ease any anxiety you may have.
Prior to your CXL treatment, Dr. Kung will perform a thorough eye exam that includes corneal mapping and vision testing. These diagnostics help determine if you’re a candidate for the procedure. Patients are typically asked to stop wearing contact lenses for several days before their appointment to allow the cornea to return to its natural shape.
The team at Kung Eye Center will also give you detailed pre-operative instructions. You may be advised to arrange transportation home on the day of your procedure, as your vision may be blurred or light-sensitive afterward. If you take any medications or have any allergies, be sure to discuss these with Dr. Kung ahead of time so your care plan can be customized for your safety.
Collagen Cross-Linking is performed in-office and typically takes about one hour. To begin, numbing eye drops are applied to ensure comfort. In the standard “epi-off” procedure, the thin outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) is gently removed to allow vitamin B2 (riboflavin) eye drops to penetrate the corneal tissue.
Once the cornea is saturated with riboflavin, it is exposed to a precise ultraviolet (UV) light for about 30 minutes. This controlled light activates the riboflavin, creating new collagen bonds within the cornea, which helps increase its strength and stability. Throughout the procedure, patients remain comfortable and are monitored closely by the doctor and support staff.
Following treatment, a protective contact lens bandage will be placed over your eye to promote healing. Mild discomfort, light sensitivity, or a gritty feeling are common during the first few days. Prescription eye drops will help manage any discomfort and reduce the risk of infection.
Most patients return to normal activities within about a week, though it may take several months to notice full vision improvement as the cornea continues to stabilize. Regular follow-up visits with Dr. Kung ensure your eye is healing properly and that the progression of keratoconus has been successfully halted.
One of the key benefits of Collagen Cross-Linking is that it can preserve your current vision and, in many cases, prevent the need for future corneal transplants. With proper follow-up care and monitoring, many patients experience lasting improvement in corneal shape and visual quality.
