Jersey City is the second-largest city in New Jersey and sits directly across the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan, making it one of the most strategically located urban centers in the entire New York metropolitan area. Home to more than 290,000 residents, the city is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse communities in the United States. Its neighborhoods range from the historic brownstones of Van Vorst Park and Hamilton Park to the sleek high-rises of the Jersey City waterfront, drawing young professionals, families, and long-time locals alike.
Jersey City is served by multiple PATH train stations, the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, NJ Transit bus routes, and ferry service, giving residents convenient access to regional medical specialists. Kung Eye Center is easily reachable from all parts of the city, providing Jersey City residents with world-class ophthalmologic care close to home.
A cataract develops when the naturally clear lens inside the eye becomes clouded, causing blurred or hazy vision, increased glare from lights, and difficulty distinguishing colors. Cataracts are primarily associated with aging, though they can also result from diabetes, prolonged UV exposure, certain medications, or previous eye injuries. Because the condition progresses gradually, many people do not notice significant vision changes until the cloudiness has advanced considerably.
At Kung Eye Center, our ophthalmologists conduct thorough evaluations to assess cataract severity and determine the most appropriate treatment plan for each patient. We use high-resolution imaging and biometry measurements to precisely plan every procedure, ensuring the best possible visual outcome. We offer both traditional cataract surgery and laser cataract treatment to ensure you receive the best treatment option for you.
The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped tissue at the front of the eye that plays a central role in focusing light. Conditions that alter the shape, structure, or clarity of the cornea can have a profound effect on vision quality and eye health. Kung Eye Center offers specialized diagnosis and treatment for a variety of corneal disorders, including those that affect younger patients and those that develop later in life. Some of the conditions we treat include keratoconus and Fuch’s dystrophy with treatment options like corneal collagen cross-linking, specialty contact lenses, and more. To learn more, don’t hesitate to take a look at our corneal conditions page and schedule a consultation today.
Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults in the United States, making regular eye care an essential component of diabetes management. High blood sugar levels can damage the tiny blood vessels that supply the retina, a condition known as diabetic retinopathy. In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy may cause no noticeable symptoms, which is why all diabetic patients are advised to have comprehensive dilated eye examinations at least once a year.
As the disease progresses, abnormal blood vessel growth can cause leakage, retinal swelling (diabetic macular edema), or even retinal detachment. Kung Eye Center offers advanced retinal imaging, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and fluorescein angiography to evaluate the degree of diabetic damage. Take a look at our diabetic eye disease page for more information.
Dry eye disease is a very common chronic condition in which the eyes either do not produce a sufficient volume of tears or produce tears of poor quality that evaporate too quickly. Common symptoms include a persistent gritty or burning sensation, redness, light sensitivity, watery eyes (a reflex response to dryness), and blurred vision that fluctuates throughout the day. Risk factors for this condition include extended screen time, contact lens wear, aging, hormonal changes, and certain systemic medications.
At Kung Eye Center, we take a thorough diagnostic approach to dry eyes, assessing both aqueous tear deficiency and evaporative dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. Our treatment options range from preservative-free artificial tears, prescription anti-inflammatory drops, and punctal plugs to in-office therapy. Every treatment plan is customized to address the underlying cause of each patient’s dry eye symptoms.
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often as a result of elevated intraocular pressure. Because peripheral vision is typically affected first and the changes occur very gradually, glaucoma is frequently referred to as the silent thief of sight. By the time a patient notices significant visual loss, irreversible damage has usually already occurred. Routine eye examinations that include intraocular pressure measurement, optic nerve evaluation, and visual field testing are the most reliable way to detect glaucoma before meaningful vision loss takes place.
At Kung Eye Center, we provide comprehensive glaucoma care, from early detection and medical management with topical eye drops to minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) for patients requiring more aggressive pressure reduction.
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is the most widely performed refractive surgery in the world, and for good reason. The procedure corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism by precisely reshaping the cornea with a laser, allowing light to focus more accurately on the retina. Most patients achieve 20/20 vision or better following LASIK, and the procedure is completed in a matter of minutes with rapid recovery.
The first step in any LASIK evaluation at Kung Eye Center is a thorough assessment, which includes detailed corneal mapping, pupil size measurements, and a review of your refractive history. For those who qualify, the results can be life-changing, dramatically reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a surgical procedure that removes the eye’s natural crystalline lens and replaces it with a customized intraocular lens (IOL) to correct refractive errors. While the technique is virtually identical to cataract surgery, RLE is performed on patients who have clear lenses, are not good LASIK candidates due to high refractive errors, thin corneas, or who are over the age of 45, and wish to simultaneously address presbyopia.
One of the most significant advantages of RLE is that it eliminates the possibility of developing a cataract in the future, since the natural lens has already been removed and replaced. Premium multifocal or extended depth-of-focus IOLs can provide excellent vision at multiple distances, often making patients fully independent from corrective lenses for the remainder of their lives.
